Smith, a native of Guelph, Ontario, was one of the most formidable.
Born in 1968 in Ontario, Canada, Smith has been a consistent tournament player since he turned professional. His first decent wins came at the World Poker Finals at Foxwoods in 1999 and 2000.

He first cashed in the WSOP in 2003. He would go on to cash in the main event in 2004 (52nd place), 2005 (471st), and 2007 (592nd). At the 2006 WSOP, he finished in 11th place finish in the $50,000 H.O.R.S.E. event for $205,920. He also finished 2nd in a WSOP circuit city event at Harrah's New Orleans, earning $293,930. In July 2006, Smith also won the World Pro-Am Challenge event at the Poker Dome Challenge, earning the $500,000 1st prize.
At the 2007 WSOP he was the runner-up in the $1,500 Pot-Limit Hold 'Em, earning $155,645.
His big breakthrough came in season 4 of the WPT. He won a WPT in the The Mirage Poker Showdown, defeating Ted Forrest in the final heads-up confrontation and earning $1,153,278, then followed that up with 2 more WPT final tables a 3rd place finish for $327,610 and a 4th place finish for $173,052. These three WPT final tables earned him the WPT Player of the Year award for season 4.
Smith won Poker After Dark´s Season 3 Week 2 after defeating Phil Ivey in heads up play.
In 2008, he continued his WPT success when he finished in 2nd place in the North American Poker Championship during season 7, earning $532,545.
Smith won a bet with Joe Sebok on who would win the most Card Player Magazine points at the 2006 WSOP. As a consequence, Sebok had to wear a bear outfit on one of the WSOP days. Smith was forced to get a tattoo on his upper right shoulder of a four leaf clover with the initials J.S. after he lost another prop bet to Joe Sebok.
Smith is good friends with Erick Lindgren, who helped him early in his career.
As of 2009, he has 15 WSOP cashes and total live tournament winnings exceeding $4,700,000. He currently resides in Las Vegas. Smith plays on Full Tilt Poker where he is one of their Full Tilt Pros.
